Birds Eye, it's not just for Dinner Anymore. Plus Bonus Pirate Content.

You know, ever since I got a Mac, I have been unable to see the Very Helpful little button in MT that allows you to do the URL link magic. I hear tell that it is because my new browser doesn't support all the bells and whistles like IE did. But. Can this be true? I tried a few others and they didn't work either. (Mozilla, IE for Mac--what's the point of that?, Something Else I Forget The Name...) I have a very old version of Movable Type too, perhaps this is my problem. Oh well, I must fight the urge to run upstairs and just post using the Dell there. Must. Learn. New. Things.

I thought Apples were supposed to be eassssy.

Anyway, I led you to believe from the title up there that I would write about birds' eyes and tv dinners. And maybe throw in a little gratuitious pirate action for fun. But I just started rambling about the Apples and Safari and URLs and find myself here at the end of a 2nd full paragraph and I have not even begun to really post about anything I intended to post about. So, I will get on with it!

(Getting on with it....)

What I have been working on?

That pirate hat...Here it is so far. Noel is going through a pirate phase. But, then again, isn't everybody? (Seriously, I am.) Curious to note that doing Fair Isle colorwork with this Dale of Norway Hauk stuff is so much easier than fingering weight Shetland yarn. Could it be due to the difference in number of plies (4 vs 2)? Or simply the thickness of the yarn? The worsted spin?

And more weaving!
(This pattern is "Triple Draught Bird's Eye" by John Murphy & dated 1824)

(Um, is it obvious that I cannot for the life of me figure out how to shrink down my pix using iPhoto? I've spent hours trying. Usually I just go into what I had been using pre-Macintosh and shrink it down 500 pixels by 500 pixels...can this be done in iPhoto? Am I in the wrong place? Help?)

2/1/06==pix problems solved--Thanks Maggie!

It's Not Just Birdseye, it be German Birdseye!

Hi, this weekend I spent a lot of time hanging around doing a whole lota cussin' and warping up the loom. It took me awhile and a lot of trial and error but finally I got something going:

My first reaction when I saw it was working was to jump up and say to myself, "It's working!! It works! It's magical magic! It looks like Birdseye--nay, GERMAN Birdseye! I love weaving! What else can I weave now?!"

I am using a 15 dent reed and waxed Jaggerspun yarn for the warp. This waxed stuff probably should use a 20 dent reed in normal conditions....I don't know. Wow, but there's a little bit of planning that goes into weaving. My original idea was to use the waxed stuff for weft too, but plans change. After trying a bunch of different weights and colors of yarn, I settled on this handspun green Romney and Mohair yarn. I think this Birdseye twill (German) looks pretty neato with the fine warp and the chunky green yarn though. Accidental goodness.

The green weft is some of my first handspun. Kind of cool that it is going into my first bit of wool weaving. Hope there is enough to weave about 5 feet.

There are 2 crossed threads in the shed--maybe you weavers can tell where it makes a mistake in the pattern. And I got them cool floating selvedges going too. Somebody give me a gold star for remembering that after all. hahaha

PS--Sorry about the gigantic Pix.

The Ironic Joy derived from knitting a Joyless Joy

(No, that is not dust on your monitor, but spots on the mirror at my inlaws house.)

I finished this sweater back in August but never got around to taking pictures. I think I needed some time to forgive it for being so temperamental. Joy was designed by Kim Hargreaves.

I leave you with this ominous warning: Believe her when she says do not put the sweater in the dryer with the buttons sewn on.
