Leigh! It's beautiful! The textured band stitches are especially lovely and watercolor-y.
Your instructions for microwave-finishing are excellent. I wish I could put my hair in mine for morning microwave finishing.

Posted by Mary Beth at March 22, 2005 01:36 PMThose mittens are amazing! I adore all the colors.
Posted by Vicki at March 22, 2005 02:34 PMI love those mitts, Leigh. I wonder if my woodstove would accomplish the same effect as the microwave, only in less time? *teehee* Ok, I learned my lesson on that one!
Posted by Kerstin at March 22, 2005 02:46 PMOh, Kerstin - I think that if the yarn is placed on top of the wood stove - the yarn will be dry in no time flat! Just leave it right next to the matches...(oops!)
Posted by Mary at March 22, 2005 04:29 PMA convergence of people's posts (this one especially), emails, and other things have all convinced me that the universe thinks I should be spinning right now. Must spin... need beautiful yarn like yours....
Can't wait to see them finished!

Posted by stinkerbell at March 23, 2005 10:52 AMI just started learning to spin, and I'm so happy I found your blog! I've been reading non-stop about spinning, and this is the first mention of microwave finishing I've come across. I'll definitely give it a try. Your yarn is GORGEOUS--something to aspire to!
Holy mother of Yarn! I am In LOVE with your mittens. I'm swooning. actually swooning!
You. In Massachusetts. Me. Not with you. What is wrong with that picture?
leigh-
well only one question, how much did the skein weigh.. b'c I'll need help with that in #6.
I am taking a spinning class. starts next month... very excited. :)
Posted by anj at March 24, 2005 12:17 PMwhoa! I love those colors!
Posted by Laura Y at March 25, 2005 01:28 AMThe yarn and mittens are SO beautiful, Leigh. You're pretty darned inspirational, girlie. I've got bags and bags of wool here to wash and process---want to come help? You get wool.....I get spinning/dyeing lessons? Hehehee!
Posted by Kim at March 25, 2005 08:07 AMOne question...I was taught to hang the skein with a weight while it dries to help set the twist. Do you do this at any point?
Thanks!
Ro
Hi Ro,
I prefer not to do that because simple washing, weights and air drying is only a temporary set and as soon as you wet down the yarn it will return to its original twist and that could skew knitting if the yarn's twist wasn't balanced in the first place.
Also, weights take away some of the yarn's elasticity, which can also mess with the gauge for knitting.
Weights are a good thing to do if you weave with the yarn though. Also, weights are good for blocking singles.
Steaming in the microwave is my favorite way!
:) Leigh
